Why does the price change over time?
Both injections are started at a low dose and increased gradually — this is called titration. The purpose is to let your body adjust and to reduce side effects such as nausea, so you usually spend your first weeks on the cheaper starter doses.
Your monthly cost then reflects whichever dose your prescriber has you on. Not everyone climbs to the maximum dose; many people settle on a maintenance dose that suits them, so the top price isn't inevitable.
Wegovy's standard maintenance dose is 2.4mg (£230/month), while 7.2mg (£245/month) is the higher licensed dose. Mounjaro's maximum licensed dose is 15mg (£295/month).
What are you paying for?
At a regulated UK pharmacy, the price covers the genuine, MHRA-licensed medicine plus the clinical service around it. That means a prescriber reviewing whether treatment is appropriate, dispensing by a GPhC-registered pharmacy, tracked delivery, and ongoing prescriber support.
The online consultation is free — you only pay if a treatment is prescribed and you choose to go ahead. A prescription is never guaranteed; it's issued only when it's clinically appropriate and safe for you.
Be cautious of prices that look far below the UK norm. Unusually cheap injections can indicate unlicensed or grey-market products sold outside a regulated pharmacy.
How do injections compare with the tablet options?
Injections aren't the only route. The Wegovy Tablet (oral semaglutide) is a once-daily tablet starting at £115/month, taken first thing on an empty stomach with a small sip of plain water — then you wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else, or taking other medicines. Taken with food it is far less effective.
A newer once-daily pill, Foundayo (orforglipron), is not yet UK-licensed. It is under MHRA review and expected to become available privately later, so it cannot be bought in the UK yet.

How the medicines work and what results to expect
Both injections work on gut-hormone appetite pathways. Wegovy is a GLP-1 receptor agonist that mimics a natural gut hormone controlling appetite, so you feel fuller sooner and for longer and the stomach empties more slowly. Mounjaro activates two receptors — GLP-1 and GIP — at the same time.
In the STEP UP clinical trial, adults on the Wegovy 7.2mg dose lost on average 20.7% of their body weight over 72 weeks, alongside lifestyle support. Individual results vary; not everyone reaches this.

Who can be prescribed weight loss injections?
Eligibility is the same across these treatments. You may be suitable if you are:
- Aged 18 or over
- Living with a BMI of 30 or more (obesity), or
- A BMI of 27–30 with a weight-related condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnoea
They are not suitable if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding; have type 1 diabetes; have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN2; have a history of pancreatitis; have severe gastrointestinal disease; have an active eating disorder; have severe liver or kidney impairment; or are allergic to the active ingredient.
Side effects to be aware of
The most common side effects (affecting more than 1 in 10 people) include nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting, decreased appetite and fatigue. These are often worst when starting or increasing a dose and tend to ease over time.
Rare but serious risks include severe allergic reaction, acute pancreatitis, severe hypoglycaemia, severe gastrointestinal disease, and worsening diabetic retinopathy. If you experience a suspected side effect, you can report it via the MHRA Yellow Card scheme at https://yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk/.
