BMI thresholds, health conditions and the checks a UK prescriber has to make before prescribing.
In the UK a prescriber can usually consider a weight-loss medicine if your BMI is 30 or more, or 27 or more alongside a weight-related condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnoea or PCOS. You must be 18 or over. Meeting the BMI threshold is the starting point, not the decision: the prescriber also reviews your medical history, your other medicines and anything that makes treatment unsafe, and can decline on any of those grounds.

What BMI do you need for weight-loss injections in the UK?
A BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above if you also have a weight-related health condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnoea or PCOS. BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. The figure is checked by the prescriber rather than taken from a self-reported form.
Can I get weight-loss injections on the NHS?
The NHS does prescribe them, but access is limited and usually routed through a specialist weight-management service with its own criteria, which are stricter than the licensed thresholds. Waiting times vary widely by area. Your GP can tell you what is available locally and whether you would be referred.
What stops someone lying about their weight to qualify?
The consultation. A prescriber verifies height and weight independently rather than accepting the questionnaire, which is why the appointment involves seeing the patient. Someone whose real BMI is below the threshold will not be prescribed, and the payment is refunded in full if a prescriber decides not to treat.
Who cannot take these medicines?
They are not suitable in pregnancy or while breastfeeding, or if you are trying to conceive. A personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2, or previous pancreatitis, will usually rule them out. Several other conditions and medicines need review first.
