Mounjaro is a weekly self-injection that is titrated (increased step by step) so your body can adjust and side effects are kept to a minimum. Because the price is linked to the dose, your monthly cost typically rises as you move up through the strengths.

Why does the price go up over time?
Mounjaro is not a one-size-fits-all medicine. Everyone starts on the low 2.5mg dose for the first four weeks, which is a settling-in dose rather than a full treatment dose.
From there, your prescriber may increase the dose gradually — through 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg and beyond — based on how you're tolerating the medicine and how you're progressing. Higher doses contain more medicine, which is why the monthly cost increases.
This step-up approach is deliberate. Titrating slowly gives your gut time to adjust, which helps reduce common side effects such as nausea. Not everyone needs to reach the maximum dose — the right dose for you is a clinical decision, not an automatic climb to 15mg.

Mounjaro is distinctive because it activates two gut-hormone receptors — GLP-1 and GIP — at the same time, whereas Wegovy works on the GLP-1 receptor alone. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial, participants on the 15mg dose lost on average 22.5% of body weight over 72 weeks, alongside lifestyle support (Jastreboff AM, et al. N Engl J Med. 2022;387(3):205–216). Who can be prescribed Mounjaro?
Mounjaro may be considered if you are aged 18 or over and have a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27–30 with a weight-related condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnoea.
It is not suitable for everyone. It cannot be prescribed if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding, or if you have type 1 diabetes, a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN2, a history of pancreatitis, severe gastrointestinal disease, an active eating disorder, severe liver or kidney impairment, or a known allergy to the active ingredient.
Side effects to be aware of
The most common side effects (affecting more than 1 in 10 people) include nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting, decreased appetite and fatigue. Rare but serious risks include severe allergic reaction, acute pancreatitis, severe hypoglycaemia, severe gastrointestinal disease and worsening diabetic retinopathy.
