The key difference is not the molecule but the marketing authorisation — the specific use each brand is licensed for by regulators.
- Rybelsus is licensed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, at doses of 3mg, 7mg and 14mg. It is prescribed to help control blood sugar, not specifically for weight loss.
- Wegovy Tablet is oral semaglutide licensed specifically for weight management, at higher maintenance doses.

What is the Wegovy Tablet?
The Wegovy Tablet is the same active medicine as the Wegovy injection, taken as a once-daily tablet rather than a weekly injection. It is live and in stock in the UK, having launched in July 2026.
It follows a stepped titration to help your body adjust and reduce side effects:
- 1.5mg starter dose
- 4mg
- 9mg
- 25mg maintenance (the maximum licensed dose)
How to take it correctly
This is where oral semaglutide differs most from a typical tablet. It must be taken first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, with only a small sip of plain water.
You then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else, or taking other medicines. Taken with food, oral semaglutide is far less well absorbed and therefore much less effective — so the routine really matters.
How effective is it?
In the OASIS 4 trial, adults on oral semaglutide 25mg lost on average 16.6% of their body weight over 64 weeks, alongside lifestyle support. Individual results vary; not everyone reaches this.
What is Rybelsus?
Rybelsus is oral semaglutide licensed for type 2 diabetes. It is taken once daily, on an empty stomach, with the same 30-minute waiting rule as the Wegovy Tablet — the absorption chemistry is identical.
However, Rybelsus is authorised at lower maximum doses (up to 14mg) and its licensed purpose is blood-sugar control. It has not been licensed as a weight-loss treatment in the UK.
You may see Rybelsus discussed online in the context of weight loss, but prescribing a diabetes medicine purely for weight management would be an off-licence use. For weight management, a purpose-licensed product is the appropriate route.

Eligibility for weight-loss treatment is generally:
- Aged 18 or over
- BMI of 30 or above (obesity), or
- BMI 27–30 with a weight-related condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnoea
It is not suitable if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding; have type 1 diabetes; have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN2; have a history of pancreatitis; have severe gastrointestinal disease; have an active eating disorder; have severe liver or kidney impairment; or are allergic to the active ingredient.
Side effects to be aware of
Oral semaglutide shares the GLP-1 class side-effect profile. The most common effects (affecting more than 1 in 10 people) include nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting, decreased appetite and fatigue. These are often most noticeable early on or after a dose increase, which is why the dose is stepped up gradually.
Rarer but serious effects can include severe allergic reaction and acute pancreatitis. If you experience severe or persistent symptoms, seek medical advice.
