The Wegovy Tablet 30-minute rule means you take it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach with a small sip of plain water, then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else, or taking other medicines. This wait is essential because taking the tablet with food or too much liquid makes it far less effective.
The Wegovy Tablet (oral semaglutide) contains the same active medicine as the Wegovy injection, but getting a tablet version of a gut hormone to absorb properly is genuinely tricky. The 30-minute rule is how that problem is solved, so following it exactly is the single most important habit for getting the most from your treatment.
The rule in one place
- Take it first thing in the morning, before anything else passes your lips.
- Swallow it whole with a small sip (up to about half a glass) of plain water only.
- Do not split, crush or chew the tablet.
- Then wait at least 30 minutes before food, other drinks (including tea, coffee or juice), or any other medicines or supplements.
- After 30 minutes, you can eat, drink and take your other medicines as normal.
Why the 30-minute wait matters
Semaglutide is a peptide, a chain of building blocks similar to those in the protein you eat. Left to itself in the stomach, it would be broken down by acid and digestive enzymes long before it could be absorbed, just like any other protein in a meal.
To get around this, the tablet includes an absorption enhancer that briefly creates a small, favourable pocket around the tablet as it dissolves against the stomach lining. This helps a portion of the medicine cross into your bloodstream before it is destroyed.
That process only works when the stomach is genuinely empty. Food, and even significant amounts of other fluid, dilute and disrupt this pocket, so much less medicine gets through. This is why the empty stomach and the small sip of water are non-negotiable.
Why plain water only, and only a small sip
More water sounds harmless, but a large volume washes the tablet through the stomach too quickly and dilutes the local environment it depends on. Tea, coffee, milk and juice count as food-like substances that interfere with absorption, so they must wait until the 30 minutes are up.
What happens if you take it with food?
Nothing dangerous, but the medicine simply will not work as well. A dose taken with breakfast or a large drink may deliver only a fraction of the intended amount into your bloodstream, which can blunt the appetite effect you are relying on.
Because the benefit builds up week to week, repeatedly taking it incorrectly can undermine your whole course of treatment without any obvious warning sign.
How the dosing schedule works
The Wegovy Tablet is a once-daily tablet, taken the same way every morning. The dose is increased in steps to help your body adjust and to reduce side effects.

Practical tips for sticking to the rule
- Anchor it to waking up. Keep the tablets and a small glass by your bed or the bathroom sink so it is the very first thing you do.
- Set a 30-minute timer so your morning tea, coffee or breakfast waits until it goes off.
- Move your other medicines and vitamins to after the 30-minute window if a pharmacist confirms that is appropriate for you.
- If mornings are chaotic, build in a small buffer — the appetite benefit is worth the short wait.
What if you miss a dose?
If you forget and have already eaten or had a drink, skip that day's dose and take the next one as normal the following morning. How it compares to other options
The 30-minute rule is specific to oral semaglutide. The Wegovy injection and Mounjaro are once-weekly injections with no food-timing rules. A future once-daily pill, Foundayo (orforglipron), is designed to be taken any time of day with or without food, but it is not yet UK-licensed and is not available to buy now.

Who the Wegovy Tablet is for
The Wegovy Tablet may be an option if you are aged 18 or over and have a BMI of 30 or more, or a BMI of 27–30 with a weight-related condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnoea.
It is not suitable for everyone. It should not be used if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding, or if you have type 1 diabetes, a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2, a history of pancreatitis, severe gastrointestinal disease, an active eating disorder, severe liver or kidney impairment, or a known allergy to the active ingredient.

Side effects
The Wegovy Tablet has the same GLP-1 class side-effect profile as the injection. Common effects (affecting more than 1 in 10 people) include nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting, decreased appetite and fatigue, and these are often most noticeable when a dose is first increased.
Rare but serious effects can include severe allergic reactions, acute pancreatitis and severe gastrointestinal problems. Seek medical help if you experience severe or persistent symptoms.
