The 25mg strength of the Wegovy Tablet — the maximum maintenance dose of oral semaglutide — has just arrived in our pharmacy and is now in stock. That means our prescribers can now prescribe and our pharmacy can dispense the full Wegovy Tablet range, from the 1.5mg starter dose all the way up to the 25mg maintenance dose, to patients for whom it is clinically appropriate.
What is the Wegovy Tablet 25mg?
The Wegovy Tablet contains the same active medicine as the Wegovy injection — semaglutide — but is taken as a once-daily tablet rather than a weekly injection. It is the first GLP-1 medicine licensed specifically for weight management that comes in tablet form.
Treatment is built up gradually through a titration ladder so your body can adjust and side effects stay manageable:
- 1.5mg — starter dose
- 4mg
- 9mg
- 25mg — maintenance (maximum licensed) dose
The 25mg dose that has now arrived sits at the top of that ladder. You do not start on it — your prescriber increases your strength step by step, usually around every four weeks, under clinical supervision.
Who is the 25mg dose for?
The maintenance dose is intended for patients who have already titrated up through the lower strengths and are ready to move to the top of the ladder, as well as for some patients switching to the tablet from a higher-dose weight-loss injection.
If you are currently on a weight-loss injection (Wegovy or Mounjaro) and would like to move to the daily tablet, we now match the tablet strength you can start on to your current injection dose, using clinical dose-equivalence data. We show you the highest tablet strength that is appropriate for your current injection dose and mark it as your recommended strength — and your prescriber confirms the final choice with you. Moving from an injection to the tablet is an off-label prescribing decision, which your prescriber makes with you at your consultation and in your best interests.
How do you take it?
How you take the Wegovy Tablet matters a great deal. Take it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach with a small sip of plain water (no more than 120 ml), then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else, or taking any other medicines. Taken with food, it is far less effective.
How well does it work?
In the OASIS 4 trial, adults on oral semaglutide 25mg lost on average 16.6% of their body weight over 64 weeks, alongside lifestyle support. Individual results vary. This is a cross-trial figure and not a head-to-head comparison with the injection.
Is it right for me?
The Wegovy Tablet is a prescription-only medicine and is not suitable for everyone. It is generally considered for adults aged 18 or over with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27–30 with a weight-related health condition. It is not suitable if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding, and there are several medical histories that rule it out. Its side effects are typical of the GLP-1 class — most commonly nausea, which usually settles as your body adjusts.
A prescriber will only supply treatment if it is clinically appropriate for you, following a free online consultation. You can of course discuss the right strength with your prescriber — the final clinical decision is always theirs.
