Foundayo vs the Wegovy Tablet: Two Oral GLP-1s

Foundayo (orforglipron) and the Wegovy Tablet (oral semaglutide) are both once-daily oral GLP-1 receptor agonists licensed in the UK for weight management. The most practical everyday difference is how they are taken: the Wegovy Tablet must be swallowed first thing on an empty stomach with strict timing rules, while Foundayo is a small-molecule pill that can be taken at any time, with or without food or water.

This article explains what each medicine is, how they work, their dosing and trial figures, and how they compare in day-to-day use — as neutral educational information, not a recommendation. A prescriber decides what, if anything, is clinically appropriate for you.

The short answer

Both are tablets rather than injections, and both belong to the GLP-1 class that helps control appetite. The Wegovy Tablet is the same active medicine as the Wegovy injection (semaglutide) in oral form. Foundayo (orforglipron) is a different, newer type of GLP-1 — a "small molecule" designed to survive digestion — meaning the timing rules are more relaxed.

One important availability point: we currently supply the Wegovy Tablet. We do not supply Foundayo yet, though we intend to offer it once we are able to obtain it. The comparison below is educational so you understand both options.

What each medicine is

Wegovy Tablet (oral semaglutide)

The Wegovy Tablet contains semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist that mimics a natural gut hormone controlling appetite. It helps you feel fuller sooner and for longer, and slows how quickly the stomach empties.

It is the same active medicine as the Wegovy injection, taken instead as a once-daily tablet. It launched in July 2026 and is in stock.

Foundayo (orforglipron)

Foundayo is orforglipron, a small-molecule GLP-1 receptor agonist. Unlike peptide-based GLP-1s, it is chemically built to survive digestion, so it can be taken as an ordinary once-daily pill at any time of day, with or without food or water.

Foundayo received FDA approval on 1 April 2026 and an MHRA UK marketing authorisation on 10 August 2026 for weight management and type 2 diabetes — the first approval of this GLP-1 tablet in Europe. A marketing authorisation permits a medicine to be prescribed in the UK; it does not mean every pharmacy stocks it. There is no published UK price and no confirmed NICE (NHS funding) timetable at present.

How they work

Both act on the GLP-1 receptor, which is involved in appetite and blood-sugar regulation. When these receptors are activated, many people feel less hungry, feel full sooner, and eat less overall.

The key mechanistic difference is chemistry. Semaglutide is a peptide, which is why the oral version needs an absorption aid and careful timing. Orforglipron is a non-peptide "small molecule", which is more robust in the digestive tract — the reason its timing rules are simpler.

The Wegovy Tablet's critical timing rule

The Wegovy Tablet must be taken first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, with only a small sip of plain water. You then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else, or taking other medicines. Taken with food, it is far less effective — so this routine matters.

Doses step up gradually: 1.5mg starter, then 4mg, 9mg, and up to 25mg as the maximum licensed maintenance dose. Titrating slowly helps your body adjust and can reduce side effects.

Foundayo's simpler routine

Because orforglipron survives digestion, Foundayo can be taken at any time of day, with or without food. For people who struggle with the empty-stomach routine, this practical difference is often the headline point — though, again, whether a medicine suits you is a clinical decision.

Trial results

These figures come from separate trials and are not head-to-head comparisons, so they cannot be read as one medicine "beating" another.

  • Wegovy Tablet (oral semaglutide 25mg): In the OASIS 4 trial, adults on oral semaglutide 25mg lost on average 16.6% of their body weight over 64 weeks, alongside lifestyle support. Individual results vary; not everyone reaches this.
  • Foundayo (orforglipron 36mg): In the Phase 3 ATTAIN-1 trial, participants on the 36mg dose lost on average 12.4% of their body weight over 72 weeks, alongside lifestyle counselling. Individual results vary; not everyone reaches this.

Because trial populations, durations and designs differ, these numbers describe each medicine on its own terms rather than ranking them.

Side effects

Both are GLP-1 medicines and share a similar side-effect profile. Common effects (affecting more than 1 in 10 people) include nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting, decreased appetite and fatigue. These are often most noticeable early on and can ease as your body adjusts.

Serious but rare risks across the GLP-1 class include severe allergic reaction, acute pancreatitis, severe low blood sugar (particularly with other diabetes medicines), severe gastrointestinal disease, and worsening diabetic retinopathy in people with diabetes.

If you experience a side effect, you can report it through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme at https://yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk/.

Who these medicines are for

Eligibility is the same across our weight-management treatments. They may be appropriate if you are aged 18 or over and have a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27–30 with a weight-related condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnoea.

They are not suitable if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding; have type 1 diabetes; have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN2; have a history of pancreatitis; have severe gastrointestinal disease; have an active eating disorder; have severe liver or kidney impairment; or are allergic to the active ingredient.

These are Prescription-Only Medicines. They are available only after a clinical consultation with a GPhC-registered prescriber, who prescribes a treatment only if it is clinically appropriate — a prescription is never guaranteed.

How to decide

The honest answer is that the right choice depends on your health, your preferences and a prescriber's assessment. If a simple, no-timing routine matters most to you, an any-time tablet like Foundayo is a consideration for when it becomes available to us. If you want a licensed oral option in stock now, the Wegovy Tablet is available — provided the empty-stomach routine fits your day.

You can also explore injectable options such as Mounjaro, or see the full treatments overview. A free online consultation is the practical next step — a registered prescriber reviews your answers to check what, if anything, is suitable and safe for you.

Weight-loss medicines are prescription-only, are not suitable for everyone, and are prescribed only after a clinical consultation with a GPhC-registered prescriber. Individual results vary. Always speak to a UK-registered pharmacist or doctor before starting or changing any prescription medication.
