If you qualify for Mounjaro on the NHS, it is almost always cheaper — you pay only the standard NHS prescription charge (or nothing if you are exempt), rather than a monthly private fee. The catch is that NHS access is tightly rationed, the rollout is staged over several years, and eligibility is far stricter than for a private service — so for many people the realistic choice is a private prescription from £160 per month.
The short answer on cost
On the NHS, prescription medicines are charged at a flat prescription charge per item (or free if you are exempt — for example if you receive certain benefits, are pregnant, or hold a valid exemption certificate). That flat charge is the same regardless of the medicine's true cost, so NHS Mounjaro is heavily subsidised.
Privately, you pay the real monthly cost of the medicine plus the clinical service. At The Weight Clinic, Mounjaro ranges from £160 per month for the 2.5mg starter dose up to £295 for the 15mg maximum dose. So purely on headline price, the NHS wins — when you can get it.
Why "cheaper" isn't the whole story
The honest comparison isn't just two numbers. It's whether you qualify, how long you'll wait, and whether the route fits your situation. The NHS saves money but has gatekeeping; private costs more but is faster and more flexible.
NHS Mounjaro: strict eligibility and a staged rollout
The NHS is rolling Mounjaro out in phases over several years, prioritising people with the highest clinical need first. Access is typically routed through specialist weight-management services or, increasingly, general practice under national guidance — but capacity is limited and thresholds are high.
In practice that means NHS access usually requires a notably higher BMI than private services, often combined with several weight-related conditions. Even when you meet the criteria, there can be a waiting list. If you don't meet the current threshold, you may wait a long time or not qualify at all under the NHS route.
Private Mounjaro: faster access, wider eligibility, a monthly fee
A regulated private service like The Weight Clinic can assess you quickly through a free online consultation. Private eligibility is broader than the NHS threshold: you generally need to be 18 or over with a BMI of 30+, or a BMI of 27–30 alongside a weight-related condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnoea.
You pay the real monthly price, but there's no waiting list and no NHS referral hurdle. A prescription is only ever issued if a GPhC-registered prescriber judges it clinically appropriate — treatment is never guaranteed.

Private Mounjaro pricing by dose
Mounjaro is titrated slowly, starting low and increasing only if needed and tolerated. Most people spend their first weeks on the cheaper starter doses, so your early months typically cost less than the maximum dose.
- 2.5mg (starter): £160/month
- 5mg: £185/month
- 7.5mg: £240/month
- 10mg: £260/month
- 12.5mg: £275/month
- 15mg (maximum): £295/month
Mounjaro works differently from other options because it activates two gut-hormone receptors — GLP-1 and GIP — at once. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial, participants on the 15mg dose lost on average 22.5% of body weight over 72 weeks, alongside lifestyle support. Individual results vary; not everyone reaches this. Weighing it up: which route suits you?
Choosing a route is about more than the sticker price.
- NHS may be right if you meet the current clinical thresholds, you're comfortable going through a specialist service, and you can wait. It's the cheapest route when you qualify.
- Private may be right if you don't meet NHS thresholds, you can't wait for a staged rollout, or you want a streamlined online process with ongoing prescriber support — and the monthly cost is manageable for you.
It's also worth comparing medicines, not just routes. The Wegovy injection, the Wegovy Tablet and Foundayo (orforglipron) are all options with different prices and formats — some start from £115/month. You can see them side by side on our treatments overview and weight-loss injections pages.
Side effects: the same whichever route you choose
The medicine is identical whether prescribed by the NHS or privately, so the safety profile is the same. Common side effects (affecting more than 1 in 10 people) include nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting, decreased appetite and fatigue. These are often strongest after a dose increase and tend to settle.
Serious but rare risks include severe allergic reaction, acute pancreatitis, severe hypoglycaemia, severe gastrointestinal disease and worsening diabetic retinopathy. Mounjaro isn't suitable for everyone — for example if you're pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding, have type 1 diabetes, a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2, a history of pancreatitis, severe GI disease, an active eating disorder, or severe liver or kidney impairment.
If you experience side effects, you can report them via the MHRA Yellow Card scheme at https://yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk/.
Making sure a private service is legitimate
If you go private, use a properly regulated UK pharmacy rather than an unregulated overseas seller. The Weight Clinic dispenses only genuine, MHRA-licensed medicines from our own GPhC-registered pharmacy (North Harrow Pharmacy, GPhC number 1034996), which anyone can verify on the General Pharmaceutical Council register. Every prescription is issued by a GPhC-registered independent prescriber. You can read more on our about page or contact us with questions.
