Yes, it is legal to buy Mounjaro (tirzepatide) online in the UK — but only from a pharmacy registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), and only after an online clinical consultation where a GPhC-registered prescriber confirms it is appropriate for you. Mounjaro is a Prescription-Only Medicine, so it cannot legally be sold without a valid prescription.

Buying Mounjaro from any website that sells it without a consultation, without a prescription, or without a verifiable UK pharmacy registration is not legal and is not safe. Below is how the law works and how to check a service before you buy.

Is buying Mounjaro online actually legal in the UK?

Buying Mounjaro online is legal in the UK provided three conditions are met: the medicine is a genuine MHRA-licensed product, it is supplied by a GPhC-registered pharmacy, and a prescription has been issued by a UK-registered prescriber after assessing you. Mounjaro is a Prescription-Only Medicine, which means no legitimate seller can supply it on request alone.

The illegality lies not in the "online" part but in bypassing the prescription. A regulated online pharmacy is simply a lawful route to the same medicine you would get from a high-street pharmacy — the clinical checks still happen, just digitally. You can learn more about how Mounjaro works on our Mounjaro page.

Why does Mounjaro need a prescription at all?

Mounjaro needs a prescription because tirzepatide is a Prescription-Only Medicine that is not suitable for everyone and carries real risks that a prescriber must weigh up first. It activates two gut-hormone receptors — GLP-1 and GIP — to reduce appetite, and it is taken as a weekly self-injection titrated upward over time.

A prescriber must rule out conditions that make Mounjaro unsafe, such as pregnancy or breastfeeding, type 1 diabetes, a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN2, a history of pancreatitis, severe gastrointestinal disease, an active eating disorder, or severe liver or kidney impairment. Selling it without that check is both unlawful and dangerous.

How do I check an online pharmacy is legitimate?

You can confirm a UK online pharmacy is legitimate by checking it against the regulators that license pharmacies and medicines. A genuine service will display its GPhC registration and name its Superintendent Pharmacist openly, and you can verify both independently.

  • GPhC register: every legal UK pharmacy has a registration number you can look up on the General Pharmaceutical Council register at pharmacyregulation.org. The Weight Clinic dispenses through North Harrow Pharmacy, GPhC registration number 1034996.
  • Named Superintendent Pharmacist: a regulated pharmacy names the pharmacist responsible for clinical governance. At The Weight Clinic that is Andrew Lane (GPhC 2027876).
  • A real consultation: a legitimate service requires a health questionnaire and prescriber review before selling — not a tick-box at checkout.
  • Genuine, licensed medicine: only MHRA-licensed Mounjaro, dispensed by the pharmacy itself, never "grey-market" or unlicensed stock from an overseas warehouse.
  • Data protection: registration with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) and compliance with the NHS Data Security and Protection Toolkit (DSPT).

You can read more about our regulated process on our about page or begin a free online consultation.

What are the warning signs of an illegal Mounjaro seller?

The clearest warning sign of an illegal Mounjaro seller is any site that will sell it without a prescription or a clinical consultation. Because Mounjaro is a Prescription-Only Medicine, no lawful UK supplier can skip that step.

  • No health questionnaire and no prescriber review before purchase.
  • No GPhC registration number, or a number that does not match on the GPhC register.
  • No named Superintendent Pharmacist and no UK contact details.
  • Medicine shipped from overseas with no UK pharmacy involved.
  • Prices that look too good to be true, or pressure to "stock up".

If a site shows these signs, it is not operating legally and the product may not be genuine. Report concerns and avoid buying.

How does buying Mounjaro legally online work?

Buying Mounjaro legally online works through a regulated clinical pathway, not an open shop. At The Weight Clinic the steps are:

  1. You complete a free online consultation about your health and weight.
  2. A GPhC-registered independent prescriber reviews your answers to check treatment is clinically appropriate and safe.
  3. A short video consultation is arranged where this is clinically needed.
  4. If suitable, the medicine is dispensed by our own UK pharmacy and sent by tracked delivery, with ongoing prescriber support.

A prescription is only issued if it is clinically appropriate — treatment is never guaranteed. The consultation itself is free; you only pay if a treatment is prescribed and you choose to proceed.

Am I eligible to be prescribed Mounjaro?

You may be eligible for Mounjaro if you are aged 18 or over and have a BMI of 30 or more, or a BMI of 27 to 30 with a weight-related condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnoea. Eligibility is confirmed by a prescriber, not by self-assessment.

In the SURMOUNT-1 trial, participants on the 15mg dose lost on average 22.5% of body weight over 72 weeks, alongside lifestyle support (Jastreboff AM, et al. N Engl J Med. 2022;387(3):205–216). Individual results vary; not everyone reaches this. Mounjaro is one of several options — you can compare all treatments, including the Wegovy injection and the Wegovy Tablet.

What does legal Mounjaro cost in the UK?

The cost of Mounjaro from a regulated UK pharmacy depends on the dose, because the medicine is titrated upward over time. At The Weight Clinic the monthly prices are a plain factual list, not a reason to choose on price alone:

Mounjaro monthly price by dose
DosePrice per month
2.5mg (starter)£160
5mg£185
7.5mg£240
10mg£260
12.5mg£275
15mg£295

The online consultation is free; you only pay if a treatment is prescribed and you choose to go ahead.

What side effects should I know about?

Common Mounjaro side effects (affecting more than 1 in 10 people) include nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting, decreased appetite and fatigue. These are usually most noticeable when starting or increasing the dose.

Rare but serious effects include severe allergic reaction, acute pancreatitis, severe hypoglycaemia, severe gastrointestinal disease and worsening diabetic retinopathy. If you experience side effects, you can report them through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme at https://yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk/. If you have questions before starting, contact us.
