In the UK, the Wegovy Tablet (oral semaglutide) may be suitable for adults aged 18 or over with a BMI of 30 or more, or a BMI of 27–30 alongside a weight-related health condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnoea. It is a prescription-only medicine, so it can only be supplied after a clinical consultation with a GPhC-registered prescriber who confirms it is safe and appropriate for you.
This article explains the eligibility rules in plain terms, who the Wegovy Tablet is not suitable for, and how the online assessment route works from start to finish.
What is the Wegovy Tablet?
The Wegovy Tablet contains the same active medicine as the Wegovy injection — semaglutide — but is taken as a once-daily tablet rather than a weekly injection. Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist: it mimics a natural gut hormone that controls appetite, so you feel fuller sooner and for longer, and the stomach empties more slowly.
It is taken first thing on an empty stomach with a small sip of plain water. You then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else, or taking other medicines. Taken with food it is far less effective, so this timing matters.
In the OASIS 4 trial, adults on oral semaglutide 25mg lost on average 16.6% of their body weight over 64 weeks, alongside lifestyle support. Individual results vary; not everyone reaches this.
Who can take the Wegovy Tablet? The eligibility criteria
The eligibility rules are the same as for the other weight-management medicines we supply. You may be considered for the Wegovy Tablet if you meet the following.
- You are aged 18 or over.
- Your BMI is 30 or above (the medical definition of obesity), or
- Your BMI is between 27 and 30 and you also have a weight-related condition — for example type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or obstructive sleep apnoea.
BMI (body mass index) is a measure of weight relative to height. It is a useful screening tool but not the whole picture, which is one reason a prescriber reviews your wider health rather than looking at a single number.
How to check your BMI
To estimate your BMI, divide your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared. For example, someone who is 1.70m tall and weighs 90kg has a BMI of about 31. The free online assessment calculates this for you, so you don't need to work it out yourself before starting.
Who should not take the Wegovy Tablet?
Even if you meet the BMI threshold, the Wegovy Tablet is not suitable for everyone. A prescriber will not issue it if any of the following apply to you.
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or breastfeeding.
- You have type 1 diabetes.
- You have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma, or the genetic condition MEN2.
- You have a history of pancreatitis.
- You have severe gastrointestinal disease.
- You have an active eating disorder.
- You have severe liver or kidney impairment.
- You have a known allergy to semaglutide or any of the other ingredients.
Some medicines and conditions don't rule treatment out entirely but need extra care or monitoring. This is exactly what the consultation is designed to pick up, which is why an honest and complete medical history matters.
Why the empty-stomach rule affects who it suits
Because the Wegovy Tablet must be taken on an empty stomach and separated from food, drink and other medicines by at least 30 minutes, it can suit people who prefer a daily routine and are comfortable committing to that timing. If a strict morning routine is difficult for you, a weekly injection such as Wegovy or Mounjaro may be discussed as an alternative. A prescriber can help you weigh up which format fits your life.
How the online assessment route works
The Wegovy Tablet is a prescription-only medicine, so you cannot simply buy it — treatment is only ever provided if a registered prescriber judges it clinically appropriate. Here is how the process works at The Weight Clinic.
- Free online consultation. You answer questions about your health, weight, medical history and any medicines you take. There is no charge to complete this.
- Clinical review. A GPhC-registered independent prescriber reviews your answers to check that treatment is safe and appropriate for you.
- Video consultation where needed. If anything needs clarifying, a short video consultation may be arranged.
- Dispensing and delivery. If suitable, the medicine is dispensed by our own UK pharmacy and sent by tracked delivery, with ongoing prescriber support.
A prescription is only issued if it is clinically appropriate — treatment is never guaranteed. The consultation is free, and you only pay if a treatment is prescribed and you choose to go ahead. You can begin with our free eligibility check.
Side effects to be aware of
Because it is the same active medicine as the injection, the Wegovy Tablet shares the GLP-1 class side-effect profile. The most common effects (affecting more than 1 in 10 people) include nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting, decreased appetite and fatigue. These are often most noticeable early on and as the dose increases, which is why the medicine is titrated gradually from 1.5mg up to the 25mg maintenance dose.
Rare but serious effects can include severe allergic reactions and acute pancreatitis. Seek urgent medical help if you experience severe or persistent stomach pain. You can report any suspected side effect through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme at https://yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk/.
What it costs
Wegovy Tablet pricing starts from £115/month at the 1.5mg starter dose, rising to £190/month at the 25mg maintenance dose. The online consultation itself is free, and you only pay if treatment is prescribed and you decide to proceed. You can compare all the options on our treatments overview or the weight-loss injections page.
The bottom line
You may be able to take the Wegovy Tablet in the UK if you are 18 or over with a BMI of 30+, or 27–30 with a weight-related condition, and none of the exclusions apply. The only way to know for certain is a clinical assessment — start with the free online consultation, and if you have questions first you can contact us.
