Are online weight loss clinics regulated in the UK?

Yes. Legitimate UK online weight loss clinics are regulated — the pharmacy that dispenses your medicine must be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), the medicines themselves must be licensed by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), and your data is protected under registration with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO). A weight-loss medicine can only be prescribed after a clinical consultation with a GPhC-registered prescriber.

The important detail is that not every website selling weight-loss injections or tablets is regulated. Below is how UK regulation actually works and how to check a clinic is genuine before you hand over any money.

Who regulates online weight loss clinics in the UK?

Three separate bodies regulate a legitimate UK online weight loss clinic, each covering a different part of the service. A genuine clinic can show you where it sits on all three.

  • The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) regulates pharmacies and pharmacists. The pharmacy that dispenses your medicine must hold a GPhC registration number you can verify on the public register at pharmacyregulation.org.
  • The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) licenses the medicines. Weight-loss treatments such as Mounjaro, Wegovy and the Wegovy Tablet are MHRA-licensed Prescription-Only Medicines — they are not supplements and cannot legally be sold without a prescription.
  • The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) covers data protection. A clinic handling your health information must be registered with the ICO and should also meet the NHS Data Security and Protection Toolkit (DSPT).

Weight-loss medicines are Prescription-Only Medicines, so they can only be supplied after a clinical consultation with a GPhC-registered prescriber who confirms the treatment is clinically appropriate for you.

How do I check an online weight loss clinic is genuine?

You can verify a UK online weight loss clinic yourself in a few minutes using public registers. Do these checks before you pay, not after.

  1. Find the GPhC registration number — a real pharmacy displays it. Search it on the GPhC register at pharmacyregulation.org and check the name and address match the website.
  2. Look for the named Superintendent Pharmacist — every registered pharmacy must have one, and their name and GPhC number should be findable.
  3. Confirm there is a real consultation — a legitimate clinic asks about your health and medical history and can refuse to prescribe. A site that sells prescription medicine with no health questions is not operating lawfully.
  4. Check the medicine is MHRA-licensed — genuine clinics supply only licensed, UK-sourced products, never unlicensed or "grey-market" versions shipped from overseas.
  5. Check for ICO registration for your data.

What are the warning signs of an unregulated clinic?

An unregulated or unsafe online weight loss seller usually skips the safeguards that UK regulation requires. Treat any of the following as a reason to walk away.

  • No GPhC registration number, or a number that does not match the pharmacy name on the GPhC register.
  • Selling prescription weight-loss medicine with no health questionnaire and no prescriber review.
  • No named Superintendent Pharmacist or UK pharmacy address.
  • Medicines shipped from outside the UK, or described as "generic", "research" or unbranded versions.
  • Guarantees of a prescription or a specific amount of weight loss — no legitimate clinic can promise either.
  • Pressure to buy on price alone, or prices far below the UK market with no consultation.

Is The Weight Clinic regulated?

Yes. The Weight Clinic is a fully regulated UK online weight-loss service, not an overseas or grey-market seller. Medicines are dispensed by our own GPhC-registered pharmacy, North Harrow Pharmacy, GPhC registration number 1034996 — you can confirm this on the GPhC register at pharmacyregulation.org.

Our Superintendent Pharmacist is Andrew Lane (GPhC 2027876). Every treatment is prescribed by a GPhC-registered independent prescriber on our team and dispensed by our own UK pharmacy — not a third-party warehouse. We supply only genuine, MHRA-licensed medicines, and we are registered with the ICO and compliant with the NHS Data Security and Protection Toolkit (DSPT).

How does a regulated online consultation actually work?

A regulated online weight loss consultation is a clinical process, not a shopping checkout. A prescription is only issued if treatment is clinically appropriate for you.

  1. You complete a free online consultation about your health, medical history and weight.
  2. A GPhC-registered prescriber reviews your answers to check that treatment is safe and suitable.
  3. A short video consultation takes place where it is clinically needed.
  4. If suitable, the medicine is dispensed by the UK pharmacy and sent by tracked delivery, with ongoing prescriber support.

You can see the treatments available on our treatments overview, including Mounjaro, the Wegovy injection, the Wegovy Tablet and Foundayo.

Who can be prescribed weight-loss medicine online in the UK?

Eligibility for prescription weight-loss medicine is consistent across the licensed treatments and is checked at consultation. You may be eligible if you are:

  • Aged 18 or over, and
  • Have a BMI of 30 or more (obesity), or
  • Have a BMI of 27 to 30 with a weight-related condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnoea.

These medicines are not suitable for everyone. They are not prescribed in pregnancy or breastfeeding, or if you have type 1 diabetes, a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2, a history of pancreatitis, severe gastrointestinal disease, an active eating disorder, severe liver or kidney impairment, or a known allergy to the active ingredient.

What side effects should I be aware of?

The licensed GLP-1 weight-loss medicines share a common side-effect profile. The most common effects (affecting more than 1 in 10 people) are nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting, decreased appetite and fatigue.

Serious but rare risks include severe allergic reaction, acute pancreatitis, severe hypoglycaemia, severe gastrointestinal disease and worsening diabetic retinopathy. A regulated clinic explains these before prescribing and provides a route to report problems. You can report any suspected side effect to the MHRA via the Yellow Card scheme at https://yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk/.

What does treatment cost at a regulated clinic?

At a regulated clinic the online consultation is free, and you only pay if a treatment is prescribed and you choose to go ahead. The figure you pay depends on the medicine and the dose, and it covers the medicine, the pharmacy dispensing and tracked delivery.

Never choose a clinic on price alone or trust a price that seems far below the UK market with no consultation — that is a common sign of an unregulated seller. For current figures, see each treatment page, such as Mounjaro or the Wegovy Tablet, or begin the free consultation.

This article is for information only and is not a substitute for personalised medical advice. Weight-loss medicines are prescription-only, are not suitable for everyone, and are prescribed only after a clinical consultation with a GPhC-registered prescriber. Individual results vary. Always speak to a UK-registered pharmacist or doctor before starting or changing any prescription medication.
